Is nicotine addictive?

June 13,2018.

The issue of nicotine addiction is almost hopelessly perplexing because the most of studies on nicotine dependence are a long-term studies of smokers. It is a relatively recent thing that the scientists have independently studied how nicotine is addictive without the need to inhale large amounts of cigarettes.

The most of studies were after the introduction of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), such as nicotine patches and chewing gum, and the later e-cigarettes. In fact, these studies led the FDA to conclude that over-the-counter nicotine products may not be addictive at all. An agency stated on its website: Despite the potential addictiveness of any nicotine-containing product, decades of research and use have shown that over-the-counter (OTC) product sales of NRT products do not seem to have obvious abuse or dependence potential."

Other nicotine products are not more addictive than cigarettes.

Dr. Paul Newhouse, a research fellow at Vanderbilt University said: People dont smoke without nicotine, but they dont take nicotine on their own.Nicotine is not reinforced enough. This is why FDA agrees that nicotine can be sold on the counter. No one wants to accept it because it is not pleasant on its own. However, when nicotine is delivered in an ultra-fast way - smoking, the reward for the brain is almost instantaneous, and this effect is undeniable for those people who are accustomed to it. Tobacco smoke also has other components, such as MAOI, which increase the smokers desire for more. Other nicotine products are not more addictive than cigarettes. So when you hear people claim that "Nicotine is more addictive than heroin", (A) you can be sure that they are wrong, (B) they are actually talking about smoking.
