How much nicotine is in a cigarette?

2019-12-17

Each cigarette usually contains about 10 milligrams of nicotine, but not all of it is actually absorbed. Nicotine is lost in the process of burning and filters during smoking. In fact, only a small portion of nicotine can be absorbed by the body. Each cigarette absorbs only about 1 Mg of nicotine.

How is nicotine absorbed by the body?
When you smoke, nicotine enters the blood through the lung membranes and is absorbed by the body. Nicotine usually enters the blood more efficiently in alkaline environments, which is why tobacco companies have adjusted the composition of cigarettes to raise the pH (even if it is more alkaline). After reaching the bloodstream, nicotine passes through the heart into your arteries and goes to your brain. The whole process takes 10 to 20 seconds.
